Aksel SFO at SNØ

Aksel Lund Svindal has established the after-school arrangement 'Aksel SFO', allowing kids in the age of 6-12 to spend one day per week skiing at SNØ after school.

At Aksel SFO, the kids will get to play freely in a safe environment. The goal is to allow them to feel the joy of skiing and a sense of achievement. It will also allow children that never have tried skiing before, a chance to do so here.

“Playing on skis is important, and perhaps this can lead to both increased recruitment and diversity across different cultures", says Aksel.

The project

In February 2020, we started a pilot for the project together with Lørenskog municipality with 8 children. In March, we increased the volume and continued the project together with Lørenskog municipality and schools in Lillestrøm. We invited 4th graders from SFO at Luhr, Gjellerås, Rasta and Kjeller schools to participate.

Now, more than 300 children has participated in Aksel SFO and we continue to expand the project to include more schools in Oslo as well. The feedback on the project has been great, and we are now looking forward to welcoming even more children in the future.

Implementation

Schools that wish to participate in Aksel SFO must contact SNØ directly. They will then be assigned their day and time by further agreement with SNØ. Each school gets one day per week for six consecutive weeks. Name list for participants is sent in advance from the school to SNØ, and the ski equipment will be ready at Sport 1 Snø when the children arrive. The children will be welcomed and followed by instructors throughout their stay.

The Aksel Fund

In 2016, Svindal together with Telenor decided that his first World Championship gold medal in Downhill in Åre were to be re-melted and form the basis for Akselfondet. A total of NOK 3 million has been distributed from the fund to activities that Aksel is passionate about and that promote sports enjoyment.

Among those who have received funds, are clubs and associations that need equipment, measures to give more children the opportunity to ski or to help children and adults recover from an injury. A total of 19 measures have been supported by the fund - and Aksel SFO at SNØ is one of them.
